UCTP Taino News - Guyanese-British historian, linguist, journalist, and anthropologist Ivan Van Sertima passed away on 25 May, 2009 at 74. Van Sertima was noted for his ‘Afrocentric’ theory of pre-Columbian contact between Africa and the Americas. One of his best known publications is titled “They Came Before Columbus”. This work was criticized by academic specialists who accused Van Sertima's cultural outlook of being disparaging to Native American achievements among other issues. Van Sertima also appeared before a United States Congressional committee in 1987 to challenge giving credit for the discovery of America to Christopher Columbus.
